UK Artists Out In Force For New Scratch Album

Dropping (in the US) on May 26th, Roots beatboxer Scratch’s LP Loss 4 Wordz seems to have pulled out a host of UK talent - unfortunately no MCs, but Estelle, Terri Walker, Daniel Bedingfield, Damon Albarn and, most interestingly, UK jazz/hip-hop producer & singer Elmore Judd are all set to appear.

It’s a big thing for Elmore (Louis Slipperz’s older bro btw), and I’m glad to see him succeeding after seeing him drop a sick set at the Jazz Cafe earlier this year. I highly recommend you support and buy the Insect Funk LP.

I’ve got two joints off the Scratch album, but the Musiq Soulchild one is disappointingly weak. So here’s the Estelle/Terri Walker tune, which is pretty good…

If you’re living in the UK, you might have noticed that it is a lot harder to watch music videos on YouTube. According to Google this is because the PRS - who work to collect money for all musicians in the UK - are demanding stupid amounts of money.

According to the PRS (a not-for-profit organisation by the way) they are just trying to maintain what Google is currently paying. Google want to pay less than half of that.

Having worked with the PRS I can tell you that they’re good people dedicated to helping out artists like you and me. So please pledge your support.

You hear about these new music laws all the time but this one seems worth thinking about… an obligatory form that must detail the ethnicity of the crowd expected and the full names and addresses of all performers, among other things. Don’t let it happen people. Scrap the 696.

The 696 Form compels licensees who wish to hold live music events in 21 London Boroughs to report to the police the names, addresses, aliases and telephone numbers of performers, and most worryingly, the likely ethnicity of their audience. Failure to comply could result in fines or imprisonment. We believe this places unnecessary and frankly Orwellian powers in the hands of the Metropolitan Police, an institution which does not have the best record of racial fairness. The 696 form can only serve to deter the staging of live musical events - a positive form of activity in London and all cities - stifle free expression and quite possible penalise certain genres of music and ethnic audiences. It is an intrusion too far.
