Little Brother on Net Radio
One Soulful Negro is one of my favourite blogs for copping all that music that falls somewhere between the pure soul music and commercial ‘urban’ styles. What you get is DJ Brainchild’s favourite exclusive, rare and classic choooons.
He’s just dropped the first episode of his new radio show, The Gordon Gartrell Radio Show, hosted by Phonte of Little Brother. I suggest you check it out and explore the site too, then bookmark that badboy.

Jay Electronica

This guy is definitely something else, The 31 year old is a nomadic Lyricist / Producer born in New Orleans (yet no southern drawl), he has no website.. he deleted his My-Space & Facebook prior to his highly anticipated “Act II”, the second installment in his trilogy of Acts that will lead to his debut album ”Abracadabra: Let There Be Light”. Whether he did this intentionally is unknown but he does have a knack of causing a stir by purposely leaking tracks by sprinkling them on obscure blogs and lifting them back off. I was unsure of this cat on first listen, but the more I hear the more I get slapped by utter dopeness.. everything about this guys unconventional style stimulates me, and with the late J Dilla giving his seal of approval & the likes of Erykah Badu, Nas & Just Blaze each singing his praises on wax, I believe this is a rare occasion where you can believe the hype.
Just study this short verse he has dropped on a Jon Brion score off the film from the tracks namesake and keep scouring the net for info on further installments & answers to this man of mystery
Jay Electronica - Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind

Lupe feat. Sway: We Love You

Anyone who’s listened to the Sway Dotted Lines mixtape now might have heard a little excerpt from Sway’s collaboration with Lupe Fiasco. A few of you will have heard it already but just in case, here it is. They seem to have done a few things together (i.e. shows, interviews etc) so hopefully there’s more of this to come. Lyrically Sway could’ve come a bit harder on this track but stylistically he’s undeniably Sway and I suppose that’s what’s going to get him attention at the moment.

Get Some 9th In Your Life
Love him or hate him, US producer 9th wonder`s sound has been an insulin injection to the sad, and nearly dead state of mainstream hip hop for the last 2-3 years. His sound and production style is written off by some as “limited” and “samey” yet his trademark snares and processed drums in conjunction with his soul stirring choice of samples keeps him as a firm favourite of mine. He in my opinion is the “new primo” (or is more worthy of the title than Kanye “touch the sky ai aiii” West who is nothing like the legend) on the basis that he has a distinct style and vision that he rarely moves away from, but it works time and time again proving to be a winning formula..
9ths 2nd outing with mc buckshot “the forumla” has recently been released and the jury is still out on this one for me… ive had a brief listen through and its full of that soulfull 9th wondra goodness but tracks dont standout and light my soul like many of his previous works. With the “tidy & polished” 9th heard in dream merchant 2 fresh in the memory, my greedy ears were expecting that little bit more.
sure… we all know what 9ths about by now and while i eagerly anticipate each new release with his production stamp, i have grown to accept as talented as he is.. he just isnt going to take me to new pasture’s anytime soon, needless to say he does what he does very well and he captures that soulful hip-hop sound almost perfectly.. hear for yourself and come to your own conclusions. have a butchers @ 145 9th Wonder instrumentals yep.. one hundred and fourty five, all the heavyhitters and some unreleased gems, so show your ipods some love. (.rar files require WinRAR or the like) Full track-list will be in my next update
Payin’ Homage: Remixes Vol. 2
Two of my biggest influences have got to be the Fugees and D’Angelo - artists with undeniable musicality and vibe but no fear of rawness. D’Angelo’s Voodoo was for me a perfect mix of slick harmonies, tight ensemble playing and a kind of gritty tribal-ness. Similarly, a number of the Fugees group and solo releases seemed to balance pain, emotion and general barminess in exact measures. I’ve tried to capture some of those things in these remixes…
Fugees feat. Tribe Called Quest & Busta Rhymes - Rumble in the Jungle (Charo Remix)
D’Angelo feat. Method Man & Redman - Left & Right (Charo Remix No. 2)
